The Lady Flames won the GSC Champion title on Nov. 7 (19-0), qualifying them for the NCAA Division II South Regional Championship. The team upheld an undefeated season until Nov. 21, when they hosted the semi-finals of the South Regional Championship. They lost to Georgia Tech in overtime 3–2, due to a penalty kick.
When he’s not posting up on his opponents to score a point or rebounding the basketball, business administration master’s student and fifth-year senior Jason Landman often socializes with friends, works with the intramural program at Lee University or cheers on all of Lee’s athletic teams. Landman plays center for Lee’s basketball team and has been on the team since his freshman year.
When she’s not dominating on the volleyball court, junior communications major Hannah Upton loves hanging out with her friends, watching movies and painting. Upton, the middle blocker for the Lee University volleyball team, has been on the team since her freshman year.
The Lee University Lady Flames soccer team is currently undefeated with a record of 15-0 overall and 12-0 in the Gulf South Conference, making them the regular season champions. They are ranked second in the United Soccer Coaches National Poll and are striving to keep their streak alive as they head into the Gulf South Conference Championship on Nov. 7.
In college, there are three types of sports one could get involved in: intramural, club and an NCAA sport. At Lee University, all of these are offered.
The mental health of college athletes has recently become an international conversation. During the Tokyo Olympics this summer, one of the most recognizable athletes, Simone Biles, withdrew temporarily, citing her mental health, bringing the conversation to prominence among athletes.
Last season the Lady Flames tennis team finished 9-6 overall. This year, after an uncertain season in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, the team is looking forward to improving and playing a semi-normal season.
On Friday, Sept. 17, the Lee University men’s cross country team placed ninth out of 26 teams at the Florida State University Cross Country Open. The women’s cross country team placed sixth out of 29 teams.
The Lee University Cheerleading program competed in the 2021 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championships April 27-28 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports® Complex. The squad finished second in the Small Coed Game Day category and were fifth in Small Coed Division I.
Kayla Lillard, a freshman on the cheerleading squad, finds joy in cooking up community wherever she goes. When not cheering on the Lee Flames, Lillard is a nursing major and a community builder for Simmons and Nora.
Featuring outstanding defense, solid pitching and timely hitting the Lee baseball team claimed its first Gulf South Conference regular-season championship by defeating Mississippi College 11-4, 8-6 on Sunday afternoon at Larry Carpenter Stadium. At the same time, West Florida lost its second game of a doubleheader giving the Flames the championship.
