No. 10 Flames Golf Places Tied for 3rd Against Top Teams in Nation
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 10 Lee men's golf team finished tied for third against some of the top NCAA D2 programs at the Argonaut Invitational on Tuesday afternoon. The event was staged at the Pensacola Country Club.
As a team the Flames put together rounds of 284, 294, 289 for a 3-over 867 total. The host school and GolfStat's top D2 men's progam West Florida pulled away from the field to earn a six-stroke win (846) over runner-up No. 4 Lincoln Memorial (852) and No. 6 Arkansas tied the Flames in third.
The Flames topped No. 3 USC-Aiken, No. 7 Saint Leo, No. 8 Georgia SW, No. 13 Limestone, No. 16 Columbus State, No. 18 Henderson State, No. 19 Clayton State, No. 21 Florida Southern and No. 23 Valdosta State.
It was another impressive performance from sophomore Beck Burnette with a 3-under 213 (72, 70 and 71) and finished tied for eighth. Dustin DeMersseman followed with a 217 while Oliver Lewis-Perkins gave Lee three top 20 individual performances. Evan Spence (219) and Connor Pollman (223) rounded out the scoring for the Flames.
"A strong showing from our guys this week. You look and see that over half the top 15 teams in the country were at this event. A top three finish means you had to do some things right," said Lee Dierctor of Golf John Maupin. "We've had a great spring season to this point, but I still feel like our team is getting better each time out and that's encouraging to me. These guys do a great job of learning from each tournament and then using that to prepare for the next one. We're just going to stick with that process and keep moving forward."
Dan Bradbury from Lincoln Memorial won the medalist honor with a 10-under 206. West Florida's Jake DeZoort (208) and Harry Lord (LMU) and Alejandro Restrepo (West Florida) tying for third at 209.
The Flames will now set their eyes on the Gulf South Conference Championship on April 19-20 from Mobile, Ala.
