Three things for February 4
1. Results pending from Iowa caucuses
The first presidential primary election began on Monday in Iowa. At 1,600 locations, citizens arranged themselves to represent their vote for their preferred Democratic nominee. Anyone eligible to vote in the 2020 election was able to represent their vote in-person during this time.
With 11 remaining candidates, voters stood in the appointed section of their chosen candidate. When a section represented less than 15% of the people in the room, the candidate was deemed non-viable, and the voters dispersed to another candidate’s section of their choosing.
As of this morning, the results have not been finalized due to technology problems and “inconsistencies.” According to AP News, the results are expected to be announced later today.
The results of this caucus will elect Iowa delegates to the Democratic National Convention, which takes place in July.
2. Governor Bill Lee proposes plans to invest in education
During his second annual State of the State address, Gov. Bill Lee shared his plans to invest in education, pay raises for teachers and mental health programs in schools.
Lee proposed a $250 million endowment for the mental health of students in K-12 programs, as well as a $117 million investment in raising teachers’ salaries.
Lee also expressed plans to invest more money into training new teachers, raising the literacy rate, offering college scholarships and providing health care.
3. Flames are victorious in season openers
Lee Flames baseball opened their season on Saturday with a win of 9-3 in their first game with the Urbana Blue Knights. The team also won their second game against the Urbana Blue Knights, with a final score of 7-5.
The Flames continued their streak on Sunday by winning once again, 15-7.
The Flames will play today at Young Harris College where they hope to continue their winning streak.
