Three Things for January 13
1. High winds and tornadoes sweep through the South, death count at least 7
The storm system made its way through the U.S. South on Thursday, Jan. 12, confirming seven deaths so far in Georgia and Alabama.
Six of the confirmed deaths recorded in Autauga County, Alabama, after a tornado cut a 20-mile path through the county, destroying an estimated 40 homes. Though the extent of the damages remains unknown, the Associated Press reports there were at least 12 severely injured.

2. Elvis’ daughter dies at 54
After Lisa Marie Presley was rushed to a hospital due to a medical emergency on Thursday, Jan. 12, Presley’s mother, Priscilla, confirmed Presley’s death.
Presley shared her father’s passion for music, recording her own songs and often adding her voice to her father’s recordings.
She also dedicated herself to anti-poverty efforts and worked on relief for victims of Hurricane Katrina with the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation.
Recently, she and her mother appeared on red carpets for Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” a musical feature film about her father. On Tuesday, Jan. 10, she attended the Golden Globes to celebrate Austin Butler’s award for the film.

3. Suspect charged with former Japanese prime minister’s assassination
According to the Associated Press, Tetsuya Yamagami allegedly shot Prime Minister Shinzo Abe with a homemade gun as Abe was making a campaign speech.
A Japanese court charged Yamagami with the crime, and he is set to stand trial.
According to Japanese police detaining him, he killed Abe because of an association he believed the politician had with a religious group against which he had a grudge.
At trial, Yamagami will also face the additional charge of violating one of Japan’s gun control laws. For more information about Yamagami’s arrest and impending trial, click here.
