Three Things for January 12
1. Flights delayed and canceled due to government system crash
Nationwide, flights have been canceled and delayed due to an unexpected crash of a government air system on Tuesday, Jan. 10.
The Notice to Air Missions system allows pilots to monitor conditions before the flight to ensure a safe flight. This system crashed on Tuesday and was fixed on Wednesday morning, but flights were still delayed.
The White House responded to the outage stating the crash does not seem to be a cyberattack, but the Department of Transportation will be investigating the matter.
“There was a systems issue overnight that led to a ground stop because of the way safety information was moving through the system. That was resolved, which allowed the ground stop to be lifted at 9 this morning, but through the day we’re going to see the effects of that rippling through the system,” said Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.

2. Lady Flames hoping to keep 11-win streak
The Lady Flames basketball team is starting out 2023 with a 14-2 record as they enter the second half of their season. The team has had 12 conference wins, making them undefeated in the Gulf South Conference.
“I think the league is extremely deep as always, and we are off to a great start, but our eyes will remain looking forward, only concentrating on the games in the second half of the season. It is the first time we have played a 24-game-league schedule so there is still so much of the season left. We will take a game at a time and work on getting better every day,” said Head Coach Marty Rowe.
The Lady Flames play next on Thursday Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. against West Florida and on Jan. 14 at 2 p.m against Valdosta State. They have previously beat both teams.

3. “Illegal” bench placed in protest
In October of 2022, the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee removed the benches in parks and bus stops. In response, a group by the name of the Chattanooga Urbanist Society installed a bench in Phillips Park. The city of Chattanooga has responded by announcing the reinstatement of the benches in the Phillips Park area by the end of January.
The Chattanooga Urbanist Society is an anonymous group who have gone around the city improving conditions for residents. The group hopes to help residents of the cities whose complaints have been overlooked.
The group can be found on both TikTok and Instagram. The founder of the group said, “The way that we see it, TikTok is how we raise awareness and start the conversation. Instagram is how we activate local people.”
