1. Former Miss USA dies at 30
Early on Sunday Jan. 30, New York City police identified a body found lying in the street as former Miss USA, Cheslie Kryst.
“New York police said the body, which was found on West 42nd Street, appeared to have fallen from an elevated position and that Kryst's death was most likely the result of suicide,” reports NBC News.
Kryst won the Miss USA title in 2019 and had since worked in New York as both a lawyer and an “Extra” correspondent.
"In devastation and great sorrow, we share the passing of our beloved Cheslie. Her great light was one that inspired others around the world with her beauty and strength,” said Kryst’s family in a public statement.
2. East coast winter storm causes flight cancellations
Over 1,400 flights were cancelled on Sunday, Jan. 30 during the winter storm which caused several states to declare emergencies.
“The total number of flight cancellations within, into, or out of the United States was about 1,450 as of Sunday afternoon, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware.com. Another 1,774 U.S.-related flights were delayed, the data showed,” said Reuters.
The storm left more than two feet of snow in some northeastern states. Sharon, Massachusetts and Islip, New York suffered some of the heaviest snowfall.
"We're going to give[Islip] the golden snowball award for this week, this storm. They were at 24.7 inches," New York Governor Kathy Hochul told WCBS-TV on Sunday.
The town of Sharon, Massachusetts, received 30.4 inches of snow by Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service.
"The storm moved out of our region last night, but we expect to be clearing more roads and working with our utilities throughout the day today and tomorrow," Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito said during a Sunday morning briefing.
3. Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals head to the Super Bowl
The Rams and the Bengals will play in the 56th Super Bowl on Feb. 13 at the SoFi stadium.
According to CBS, the Bengals beat the Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 in the AFC championship and the Rams beat the 49ers 20-17 in the NFC championship, securing both teams’ spot in the Super Bowl.
“On Sunday, Cincinnati advanced to the Super Bowl for the first time since January 1989 and they accomplished the feat in historic fashion, overcoming an 18-point deficit,” reports CBS.
According to CNN, the Rams trailed the 49ers by 10 points in the fourth quarter, but won “by forcing 49ers’ quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo into a game-clinching interception.”
“This year's game, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. ET on February 13, will mark the second time in as many years that the Super Bowl will be played on the home field of one of the participants,” reports CNN.
