Three Things for January 24
1. French fashion designer Thierry Mugler dies at 73
Thierry Mugler, the French fashion designer who collaborated with leading celebrities, has died at 73.
A post on Mugler’s official Instagram account confirmed the designer’s death on Jan. 23.
Mugler was born in France and studied interior design at the Strasbourg School of Decorative Arts. He then began his fashion career in 1971.
“After being launched onto a global scale, he opened his Paris boutique and began to attract international recognition for his emphasis on broad-shouldered designs evoking the styles of the mid-20th century,” reports NBC.
Mugler’s designs connected him with prominent figures like Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga and Cardi B.
2. Chiefs beat Bills in divisional round game
The Kansas City Chiefs advance to the American Football Conference (AFC) championship after beating the Buffalo Bills 46-32 in the divisional round game on Sunday, Jan. 23.
According to AP News, “The lead changed hands three times in the final two minutes of regulation.”
Harrison Butker, the place-kicker for the Chiefs, took the game to overtime with a 49-yard field goal.
During overtime, the team will play in their fourth straight AFC title game.
“The guys didn’t flinch,” said Kansas City coach, Andy Reid. “You talk about an epic game, well, that’s the way the players took it. They had tremendous respect for Buffalo and they knew it was going to be a battle and they kept going.”
ESPN reports Kansas City will play for a spot in the Super-bowl on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 3 p.m. against the Cincinnati Bengals.
3. Krispy Kreme gives blood donors free dozens
This week Krispy Kreme will give away free doughnuts to customers who donate blood to the American Red Cross.
“The promotion comes after the organization recently announced that it's dealing with the worst blood shortage in over a decade, with the organization seeing a 10% decrease in donations since the start of the pandemic in March 2020,” reports CNN.
According to CNN, the shortages are a result of many factors such as “canceled blood drives due to illness and staffing limitations, and an active flu season.”
To receive the free doughnuts, customers must place their order in person and show their donation sticker or a confirmation of their donation via the Red Cross blood donor app.
