Blanton breaks lacrosse program record for career goals
On Wednesday, Feb. 9, senior advertising major Dariana Blanton broke the Lee record for career goals, and the Lee Women's Lacrosse team earned a 19-8 win over Tusculum University in their season opener.
Blanton became the all-time leading scorer in the Lee lacrosse program’s history with over 100 career goals.
“It feels really great,” Blanton said in a post-game interview with Director of Athletic Communications Carman Lastoria. “I’m just very happy, it makes me really proud to wear the uniform that I do and to be with the team that I’m with.”
Avery Schenk, sophomore art major, scored within the first three minutes of the first quarter. The Pioneers scored two minutes later. Schenk finished the scoring with seven minutes left in the last quarter, ending in a 19-8 victory.
"Opening day, you figure out what you didn't practice enough and what you need to practice more. We had some rough spots, but overall, we chased after it pretty hard and controlled the flow of the game," said Head Coach Derrel Martin, according to Lee Athletic Communications.
During the team’s practice on Friday, Feb. 11, all Lee University faculty were invited to drop by and try their hand at throwing and catching a lacrosse ball.
“We just hope to gain that relationship with [faculty]. Obviously, they help our kids out in the classroom and get them a degree, and so we want to bring them to our side and kind of show them what we’re about and just appreciate them and help them appreciate us and what they do,” said Women's Lacrosse Assistant Coach Megan Smith.
The Lady Flames played Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Ray Conn Sports Complex for Professor Appreciation Night. The team lost 8-7, but are looking to bounce back in their game at Queens University of Charlotte today, Feb. 17.
