Three things for November 12
1. Astronomy viewing tonight
Tonight at 6 p.m., Dr. John Hearn and Dr. Matthew Krepps will have two telescopes set up at the Science and Math Complex Quad for a rare astronomy viewing.
Venus, Jupiter and its moons, Saturn and maybe even Neptune will be visible tonight. According to Krepps, this is a very rare opportunity to see all of these in one night, early in the evening and in reasonable temperatures.
All Lee students are invited to join and faculty members are encouraged to bring their families.
2. Emilie Kouatchou makes ‘Phantom’ history on Broadway
Emilie Kouatchou was on the brink of quitting musical theatre during the pandemic shutdown. However, she has recently risen to fame in her Broadway debut in “The Phantom of the Opera” as Christine. Kouatchou is the first Black woman in the role in the show’s 33-year history.
“She had auditioned for ‘Phantom of the Opera’ before — for a world tour in 2019 and right before the pandemic — but this time was her time. She auditioned in May, did callbacks through the summer and found out in August that she had landed the alternate Christine role,” reports AP News.
3. Myanmar court sentences US journalist to 11 years in jail
On Friday, Nov. 12, a court in military-ruled Myanmar sentenced U.S. journalist Danny Fenster to 11 years in prison with hard labor, the maximum penalty under three charges, despite calls for his release by the U.S.
Fenster, the managing editor of the online magazine Frontier Myanmar, is still facing additional terrorism and treason charges under which he could receive up to life in prison.
The court found him guilty on Friday of spreading false or inflammatory information, contacting illegal organizations and violating visa regulations, reports AP News.
Fenster wept after hearing the sentence and has not yet decided whether to appeal, the lawyer said.
