Three things for November 11
1. Brian Williams leaves NBC
After a 28 year career with NBC, Brian Williams announced he would be leaving the company after the end of his current contract in December.
“Following much reflection, and after 28 years with the company, I have decided to leave NBC upon the completion of my current contract in December,” Williams said in a statement. “I have been truly blessed. I have been allowed to spend almost half of my life with one company. NBC is a part of me and always will be.”
Williams has not voiced any plans to return to an on-air role as he steps down from a five-year run on the late-night talk show.
“We and our viewers will miss his penetrating questions and thoughtful commentary,” wrote the president of MSNBC, Rashida Jones.
MSNBC will be looking to replace Williams as he often anchored big political events and elections nights. The New York Times detailed Williams’ career and influence at the network.
2. Kyle Rittenhouse trial continues
Kyle Rittenhouse took the stand in his defense yesterday during the court proceedings of his murder trial. Rittenhouse, 18, is charged with the fatal shooting of Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber and wounding another, Gaige Grosskreutz.
“Rittenhouse testified Wednesday, breaking down in tears as he recounted the events leading up to the shootings and how he said he feared for his life,” said USA Today.
Rittenhouse’s attorneys have motioned for a mistrial as prosecutor Thomas Binger pursued a line of questioning the defense claims showed prejudice. Judge Bruce Schroeder decided to rule on the matter at a later date.
Much of the Thursday trial has been spent by both sides arguing over how much video evidence from the incident will be permitted in court and how far back the video should reach.
3. Local communities honor Veterans Day
Today, Nov. 11, is Veterans Day — a day marking the date when Germany and the Allies signed a 1918 agreement to end World War I hostilities.
To honor lives lost in service, many local organizations are hosting events for veterans and their families.
The Chattanooga Area Veterans Council led the 2021 Veterans Day celebration today at 11 a.m. at the National Guard Armory, according to Channel 2.
The Chattanooga Symphony and Opera will honor local veterans with the 10th annual free Veterans Day concert at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Auditorium tonight.
In remembrance of veterans, the National Park Service is offering free admission to their parks today, including local park Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.
USA Today compiled a list of restaurants and organizations offering discounts and deals today for veterans.
