Lady Flames season update
The Lady Flames basketball team is currently 11-6 looking to continue its dominance heading into the end of their season. The team closes out the regular season with games on Friday, Feb. 26, and Saturday, Feb. 27 at Auburn Montgomery.
Over the weekend, the team celebrated its graduating seniors, highlighting the athletic careers of Maddie Perrigo, Maddy Long and the support of Andrea Bailey. Haley Schubert, a junior information systems major, cemented her name in Lee’s record books, scoring her 1,000th point this weekend.
In the final two games of the regular season, Women’s Basketball head coach Marty Rowe and senior business management major Halle Hughes aim to finish the season well, as the team was on track to do during the unfinished 2019-2020 season.
The team finished the regular season with an overall record of 26-4. This season earned the team the number one seed in the D2 South Regional Tournament, which was set to take place at Lee.
Unfortunately, the Lady Flames would never step foot on the court during the tournament, as the outbreak of COVID-19 led to the cancellation of all NCAA winter championships.
Though their 2019-2020 season was brought to a disappointing end, Rowe encouraged the team to reflect on it with positive attitudes.
“Over the first couple of weeks [after the cancellation], we had Zoom calls and tried to talk ourselves through it,” Rowe said. “We tried to make sure we were thinking about other people more than ourselves. We’ve got to be compassionate about what’s going on in the world.”
Hughes attributes the team’s success to its chemistry and unyielding expectations of excellence.
“Our relationship off the court really helps the way we play together on the court,” Hughes said. “You’re not really promised tomorrow. We learned that in March of last year … playing every game the best you can, every practice the best you can because you really don’t know when it’s your last. That can transfer in life as well. You know you’re not really promised tomorrow.”
The Lady Flames will play two games this weekend at Auburn Montgomery and are expected to compete in the GSC Championship the following week.
