Women's lacrosse hopes to improve in new season
The Lee women’s lacrosse team started the 2020 season with an even 2-2 record. Now in their fourth season, the Lady Flames are looking for continued improvements to further establish themselves as a competitive sport at Lee.
“I feel really great about the start of the season,” said Dariana Blanton, sophomore midfielder. “But it’s really important to maintain that momentum that we have started off with.”
The girls’ teamwork is a large part of their early success. Junior midfielder Kaylyn Dillion said the team has impacted her the most because it allows her to be a part of a community.
The lacrosse team has dealt with its share of adversity since its inception in 2017. Last season, the team started great with a 3-0 record but went on to finish 4-12 overall. In 2018, the team finished with a 9-9 record, ending with a heartbreaking loss at the University of Huntsville during the conference championship.
“We needed to improve from last year,” said head coach Derrel Martin. “We are gonna be more competitive and maintain the team’s culture by getting along and being a team.”
There still are many games left to play and a lot of work to do this season. The team’s next home game is Feb. 28 at 6 p.m., where the Lady Flames will take on the University of Virginia at Wise on the Lee soccer field. The game will serve as Professor Appreciation Day. There will be free food from DosBros available for fans.
