As students adjust to a “new normal” of their daily routines, many are being intentional about maintaining their physical health while social distancing.

“Get active. Get creative. Fuel your body well. Exercise your brain,” said junior health science major Blaire Terrell.

With the closure of gyms and fitness classes across the U.S., students are resorting to home workouts and utilizing their environment to get their blood pumping.

“I have started to go on a lot more runs because of the lack of gym equipment at my house,” said junior business major Emma Kerwin. “Not only that, but there are so many workouts online that I have been able to follow along with many videos of at-home cardio.”

As students come back to home-cooked meals and the freedom to snack between their online classes, maintaining a well-balanced diet is also essential for physical health.

“My diet remains the same: balanced meals — proteins, carbs and healthy fats — that are primarily all whole foods,” said junior business major Carly Antolik. “Since I’m home, I have more time to cook and the ability to be more creative with my meals. I am still eating lots of fruits and vegetables to make sure I’m getting optimal nutrition.”

While the transition to new routines may initially be overwhelming, senior exercise science major Nathan Lomboy has found time in reflection and prayer to level his mental health.

“I have been able to get time alone and take mental health breaks,” said Lomboy. “I have been able to just reflect and spend time with God.” Nathan Lomboy.
