Lee University’s Sociology Club is hosting a Valentine’s Day event titled “Cupid’s Lies and the Myths of Love” on Feb. 13 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event was created to give students a better understanding of the true meaning of love.

“There are tons of ideas about what love is and what we think it is,” said junior sociology major and Sociology Club Co-president Skylar Earls. “It is beneficial to hear from someone [who has proven research] about what the myths of love are, versus what it actually is.”

Assistant Professor of Sociology Dr. Ruth Wienk will be headlining the event with a lecture about the four primary “love myths” and how love is sold as a commodity in our society.

“I am going to present some research on the love myths,” said Wienk. “There are four specific love myths that I am going to talk about that are really deeply encoded into our culture. I want to unpack them, where they come from and what happens as a result.”

Wienk ultimately decided to participate in the event because of her struggles with being single at a young age.

“[In college], I never had a boyfriend, and around Valentine’s day, I would just get depressed and sad,” Wienk said. “Now, as an adult, I look back and I think I could’ve done it so much better. I could’ve enjoyed my experience better — even as a single person.”

During the lecture, Wienk hopes to spark conversation based on social research centered around love.

“I want to talk about what, as a sociologist, the social research says about [love], and maybe we can come to a healthier place,” Wienk said. “I certainly want to affirm those who aren’t dating that it’s okay.”

Junior accounting major Aubrey Graves sees the event as an opportunity to educate students on the negative impact these myths have on women and men across the world.

“I think it is a good idea to have this event because a lot of the time people feel like they are alone when they aren’t in a relationship,” Graves said. “You build up relationships so much and you paint a picture in your head of what it should be like … It would be good to hear where the myths come from and how to fight them.”

“Cupid’s Lies” is a free event open to all Lee students, to be held in Humanities Room 101. For more information, contact Dr. Ruth Wienk at rwienk@leeuniversity.edu.
