Candidate Profile: Joe Biden
The 47th vice president of the United States Joe Biden is a noteworthy candidate for the 2020 presidential election. Having served alongside Barack Obama from 2009-2017, Biden hopes to further his White House claim as he runs for the presidency.
Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Biden is one of four siblings in his Roman Catholic family. Biden attended the University of Delaware from 1961 to 1965, where he earned a bachelor’s degree with a double major in history and political science. Biden went on to attend the Syracuse University College of Law and received his Juris Doctor in 1968. The next year, he was admitted to the Delaware Bar.
The Democratic candidate served as a Delaware U.S. senator from 1973 until 2009 when Barack Obama chose him as his vice president. Two years after serving two full terms with Obama, he announced his campaign for the presidency in the 2020 election.
Considering Biden is no stranger to the political field, his spokespeople are confident about the support of the voters.
“The American people know who Joe Biden is and what his values are,” said campaign spokesman Andrew Bates.
Biden told supporters he hopes to further what he and Obama accomplished from 2009 to 2017, especially concerning healthcare and the climate crisis. Biden hopes to add advancements to the Affordable Care Act and opposes Medicare For All.
Biden supports free college education, same-sex marriage and has shown major support for the middle-class working Americans. Biden has also expressed his support of a higher tax on wealthy Americans’ income and for increasing tax relief for middle-class families.
Biden’s immediate challenges are opposing Republican candidate Donald Trump and the remaining Democratic candidate running against him for the nomination, Bernie Sanders.
“We’re in a battle for the soul of America,” Biden told supporters during his presidential campaign announcement in April 2019. “It’s time to remember who we are. We’re Americans: tough, resilient but always full of hope. It’s time to treat each other with dignity. Build a middle class that works for everybody. Fight back against the incredible abuses of power we’re seeing. It’s time to dig deep and remember that our best days still lie ahead.”
