School of Music begins construction on Danny Murray Recording Studio
The construction of Lee University’s new recording studio in Pangle Hall is set to begin September 2019 to create the ultimate “behind the scenes” experience for music majors.
President Paul Conn announced on Saturday Sept. 14 that the recording studio will be named the Danny Murray Recording Studio. The addition is meant to commemorate Murray’s 25 years of work as the Director of the Voices of Lee.
School of Music Professor Alan Wyatt said, “This new studio will open up new curricular options for us that would help us attract excellent students to strengthen our enrollment and retention.”
The primary purpose of the studio in Pangle is to offer Lee students a real-life experience of producing professional recordings. The studio will be constructed with updated equipment and designed for one sound engineer, offering students the chance to live record vocals and instruments.
Music and worship major Mikey Galea said, “The new additions coming to Pangle Hall are very exciting. The downstairs of Pangle has so much opportunity to host the new studio.”
According to Galea, one of the most anticipated features is the modern equipment. The Danny Murray Recording Studio will not only allow traveling ensembles the chance to record albums, but will also give studio production majors the chance to see how an actual studio operates.
Other renovations in Pangle Hall include one of the rehearsal locations and three of the adjunct faculty offices in the lower level.
According to Wyatt, the hope for the studio in Pangle is to be a home away from home experience for students to connect with others of similar passions and grow together in community.
“I love that Pangle Hall is off the beaten path and well hidden,” said Wyatt. “But in time, I do believe it will become one of the hottest spots on campus.”
As the September 2019 construction date gets closer, Lauren Morrison, graduating school of music major, gives her thoughts for future peers, “I unfortunately will be graduating before it is completed, but I feel like this studio is going to open up so many opportunities for the students. The passion of so many music majors is going to be supported and developed through the construction of this facility.”
