Lady Flames live by the three in their route vs West Alabama
On a cold and rainy afternoon, the Lady Flames brought the heat as they defeated West Alabama 77-50 at Walker Arena.
Junior guard Abby Bertram led with a game-high 25 points, freshman guard Haley Schubert finished with 11 points and three other Lady Flames chipped in with nine points each.
In the first quarter, the Lady Flames shot 8-10 from three-point range as they built an early lead.
Bertram could not be stopped as she shot six-for-six from beyond the arc. Her flawless performance gave her 18 points, matching the entire West Alabama team to start the game.
“My team helps me a lot,” said Bertram. “Everything they do, I just feed through their energy. They figured out that I was hot, so they gave me the ball, and I shot it.”
The second quarter brought a change of tactics as the Lady Flames scored 16 points in the paint.
Schubert went coast-to-coast twice as she stole the ball and finished her layups uncontested, forcing West Alabama to call a timeout. Schubert’s scrappy defense gave the Lady Flames the biggest lead of the game at 22.
After a halftime score of 48-29, West Alabama came out flat as Lee continued their barrage with 22 in the third quarter and held the Tigers to only nine points.
Bertram explained that the Lady Flames focused on sticking together, despite their large lead.
“We communicated really well,” said Bertram. “We defended like we know we could.”
With eight minutes left in the fourth, veterans Bertram, Tori Lentz and Nicki Widenski subbed out to a round of applause and cheers for their dominating performance.
Senior guard Jenna Scoggins put the finishing touches on the game by hitting a three-pointer with 50 seconds left, giving the Lady Flames the 27-point win.
The Lady Flames’ defense held West Alabama to their season low in points scored—a good sign as they prepare to leave for a road trip next week.
Bertram explained that the best way to keep their momentum was to stay on course.
“Keep working hard, keep doing what we’re doing and listen to what Coach Rowe has to say,” said Bertram.
The Lady Flames will try to add to their seven-game win streak as they go on the road next week to face conference foes Mississippi College on Thursday and Delta State on Saturday.
