Summer School. For years and years these two words have been a mark of shame. Rather than spend your summer break at camp, tossing a football or having barbecues, you're forced to sit in a dim clammy room memorizing the presidents in order because you weren't smart enough to pass the class during the regular year.
If this is still you're vision of the season's academics, think again. There are tons of perks of enrolling in summer school at Lee. One, they pay for you to go to fun events on the weekends like movies and baseball games. Two, you can finish classes in way less time than in the school year. Three, you're basically just chilling with your friends and focusing on a couple classes at once. AND IT'S WARM.
Are you interested yet? Here are our top 10 classes to take during the summer.
1. Environmental Science
Most students are required to take a science class to graduate, so why not take one that's actually fun and enjoyable? Snorkel in a river. Bird-watch. Learn to save the world. It doesn't get much better than that.
2. Improv Acting
Some of us at Lee are a little too obsessed with Shenanigans Improv team. I'm looking at you with the penguin collection and lock of Jonathan Swindle's hair on display. Make your own cheap laughs this summer and maybe you just might make the team. Or at least gain the courage to talk to them.
3. TESOL Minor
Literally add a minor in one summer. If you love travel and adventure'and I know 50 percent of you do'teaching English could be your gateway into embracing other cultures.
4. French and Spanish
I know a bunch of you are dreading and putting off your language requirements. Don't drag your language classes across two semesters. You can take a full year of elementary or intermediate Spanish or French in only ONE month. I know, you must be asking, 'Es cierto?'
5. Online Classes
Don't you wish you could stay in bed AND take classes? This summer you can! Intro to Theology, Intro to Christian Ethics, Message of Old Testament and Message of New Testament are all offered online this summer (as well as some specific major classes).
6. Benevolence
Benevolence in one week. ONE WEEK!!!!! What else can you finish in that short amount of time? I can't even knit a scarf in a week. I can't read most books in a week. I can't drive to Washington state in a week (actually that's a lie, but it feels like it would take longer). Not to mention they bring you donuts on the first day'that's pretty cool.
7. Italian Cinema
Life is Beautiful. The Bicycle Thief. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. If you have no clue what I'm talking about, maybe it's time to learn a thing or two about Italian films. If you're reaching for a tissue just thinking about Guido and Dora, you'd probably be obsessed with this class. Either way it would be an intriguing digital media class to take and help you sound like that annoying intelligent film guy.
8. Internship
If you're wondering how you're going to fit an internship into your schedule, consider doing it in the summer. You'll gain great experience in your field and won't be bogged down by a full schedule.
9. Video Game Music
I kid you not. This class caters to two kinds of nerdy cool. Who doesn't want to learn where the Super Mario Bros. theme came from or what makes the Pokemon music so good?
10. Other General Core
There are several other core classes you can take this summer. Western Lit, Rhetoric & Research and Foundations of Western Culture are a few others offered. Get them out of the way now if you can.
