Former Lee Flames Pitcher gets promoted to triple A

Former Lee Baseball Pitcher Logan Workman was promoted to the triple A Durham Bulls in late August.

Workman, who was a decorated pitcher at Lee from 2018 to 2021, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 7th round of the 2021 MLB June Amateur Draft. Since then, he had been playing with the Montgomery Biscuits, the double-A team for the Rays.

In his time with the biscuits, Workman had impressive statistics, including being named the Pitcher of the Month in July 2024.

When asked about the promotion, Workman said that he has been working towards this for a while.

“You kind of have this mindset every day when you go out to the field that there's an opportunity. I mean we kind of joke around but it's the truth. I mean you're one phone call away,” said Workman.

Head Coach of the Lee Flames Baseball team Mark Brew has known that Workman has the capability to go pro since he was a player at Lee.

Workman was recruited through a training camp, and while he threw good fastballs, it was not what the team needed at the time. Workman wanted more time on the mound, so his coaches challenged him.

“We challenged him to develop, you know, a curveball, a change up, those things that it takes to pitch a more extended in a game, and he developed arguably the best change up that's ever walked out of our locker room,” said Coach Brew.

Workman’s work ethic was what he thinks got him to the big leagues. Being from a smaller school, especially from a Division two program, Workman had to work harder than players who went to big name universities.

“You didn't have the Big T on your chest from Tennessee. You're not playing for Georgia. You're not wearing the Vandy boys shirts. We had to work hard,” said Workman.

Despite the challenges, Workman has had great statistics in his time in the Minor Leagues. With the Biscuits, he has had an Earned Run Average (ERA) of 3.19, a Win-Loss Percentage (W-L%) of .609 , and 183 strikeouts.

Coach Brew was impressed by the games Workman played and attributed that to his promotion to triple-A.

“What stood out the most this year is the type of year he put together how consistent it was and how well he did at the double-A level. And so I know he was eager to get an opportunity to move forward. And so I'm glad they saw that you know what he had accomplished this year was worthy of that,” said Coach Brew.

Despite the promotion, Workman is still hard at work. On September 2, he struck 10 players across seven innings.

Workman is still looking up, and he hopes to reach the Major Leagues.

“It's just an everyday push to make it to that level in hopes that one day that you'll be able to say that I'm a big leaguer,” Workman said.

When asked about what he would say to anyone looking to go pro, he said this:

“Everybody has a chance to go and be a professional in the sport or in the world that they would like to go to…Do it at the highest standard and know you're going to fail and just get right back up and continue doing it.”

Coach Brew hopes that Workman can inspire other players and recruits to come to Lee.

“I think it matters because I think it shows that it can happen here just like it can happen anywhere else,” said Coach Brew. “I think we've had great success recruiting quality players and like Logan and the fact that he goes out and does. Well, you know what the next level even gives us more staying power with those recruits and players that have aspirations.”
