#21 Lady Flames bounce back, handle rival UAH
The Lee University Lady Flames responded to a mid-week loss with a complete 72-62 victory over Alabama-Huntsville Saturday.
“We wanted to play hard today. We wanted to compete at the highest level. We talked about doing things that may not show up in the scorebook, but help you win basketball games,” Coach Marty Rowe said postgame.
The nationally-ranked Lady Flames had just 10 assists to 16 turnovers in their setback to West Alabama on Thursday, but responded Saturday with a 21-7 assist-to-turnover ratio. The team’s 21 assists were their most in a game since their Dec. 30th matchup with Johnson.
Mallory Hampton paced the offense with 20 points, four boards, four assists and two steals on 8-of-12 shooting. Haley Schubert had 12 points, along with seven dimes and zero turnovers.
Three other Lady Flames scored in double digits – Macy Woodworth had 12, Hannah Garrett put up 11 and Addison Smith added 11.
Lee shot 31-of-60 (51%) from the field and 6-of-19 (32%) from three-point range, while Alabama-Huntsville shot 21-of-49 (42%) and 8-of-24 (33%), respectively.
“Huntsville is really improved this year, Andrea (Lemmond) is doing a great job with them. They play so hard, and they’re aggressive. We knew we had to come in ready to match, or outplay, their energy,” Rowe added.
Lee’s Morgan Carbaugh didn’t fill up the stat sheet, but made some of the “hustle plays” Rowe encouraged his team to fight for. She recorded a big steal to halt a UAH run in the 4th quarter.
“It’s important as we go back through the conference again, there’s not going to be a comfortable win. We just need to do what we do best, and win the trenches,” Carbaugh said postgame.
The Lady Flames get a full week without a game, headed into a Saturday showdown with Auburn-Montgomery in Alabama.
