Review: ‘Tom and Jerry: The Movie’
“Tom and Jerry: The Movie” continues the hilarious rivalry between the main characters of Tom and Jerry. Only this time, they are in the real world.
This movie, directed by Tim Story, tells the adventures of Tom and Jerry in New York City. Jerry moves into a prestigious hotel around the time the wedding of the century takes place.
After the hotel discovers he has taken up residency, they request the newly hired event planner Kayla Forester, played by the Chloe Grace Moretz, get rid of the mouse. With the help of Tom, Kayla sets out to kick Jerry out of the hotel before he ruins the wedding and her chances of proving herself.
The beloved cartoon “Tom and Jerry: The Movie” created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera has been around since the 1940s. Millions of people, including me, have enjoyed watching those moments of Jerry outsmarting Tom.
I believe the original cartoon is far better than the movie. For one thing, the cartoon focuses solely on the characters of Tom and Jerry while the movie bounces back and forth between a variety of other characters.
Although I found the movie laughable, I did not care for the way the animation was structured. According to ScreenRant website, the director explained why there were “2D characters in a 3D world.” The film crew wanted to keep the original 2D drawings that were seen in the classic cartoon.
I did not like how the creators combine the 2D characters in the 3D world. The animation of the animals did not mix well with the real world setting. I believe if you want to do a live action film with real people, the animals should look real as well.
Overall, I thought this movie had some laughable moments. In the end, I was sort of disappointed in the film as a whole. I enjoyed seeing the classic battle between Tom and Jerry but did not care to see the conflicts with other characters. Even though the story had a good ending, there was too much arguing between the characters. The main focus was taken from Tom and Jerry.
Rotten Tomatoes critics gave “Tom and Jerry: The Movie” a 25% rating while IMDB rates the movie a 5.3/10. Both websites agree the movie was not bad, just not as glamorous as the original cartoon. I agree with these reviews. While I did not want to immediately turn the movie off, I found parts of it boring.
Overall, I would rate this movie 6/10. “Tom and Jerry: The Movie” portrayed original plot content while bringing in their own ideas to the movie to make it more modern.
“Tom and Jerry: The Movie” is currently rated PG and is available to view in theaters and on HBO Max.
