Three things for September 24
1. Six juveniles arrested in Bradley County shooting and auto theft
On Thursday, Sept. 23, police arrested six Chattanooga juveniles for serial vehicle theft and the shooting of a Bradley County Sheriff K9 on Wednesday.
Charges against the juveniles from the Cleveland Police Department include 15 counts of auto burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary and felony evading arrest. From the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, they face charges of theft over $10,000, conspiracy to commit theft over $10,000 and attempted killing of an animal.
The K9 involved, named Joker, is in treatment at an emergency animal hospital in Chattanooga, where his condition remains serious.
“He is an extremely strong patient who is being incredibly tolerant with his doctors and nurses,” reports WATE.
As earlier reported, law enforcement responded to an auto burglary at an apartment complex on Harrison Pike in Cleveland at around 2 a.m. When they arrived, officers saw a white Jeep Gladiator fleeing the scene. Deputies with Bradley County made contact and attempted to stop the then confirmed stolen vehicle, according to WKRN.
The suspects fled on foot into the woods around Toyota of Cleveland near Exit 20. K9 Joker was deployed by Deputy Eduardo Choate. The K9 made contact with the suspect and was shot multiple times. K9 Joker was immediately taken to an emergency animal hospital for surgery due to his life-threatening injuries. Deputy Choate was unharmed during the incident.
2. Gunman kills one woman in Tennessee grocery store shooting
On Thursday, Sept. 23, a gunman killed one person and wounded 14 others in a Kroger grocery store in Collierville, Tennessee. The entire shooting was over within minutes as first responders swarmed the scene.
The shooter died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound within a couple of minutes of police arriving, reports AP News.
On Friday, some of the wounded were still in critical condition and fighting for their lives, Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane said at a morning news conference.
The victims included 10 employees and five customers. Lane identified the woman who was killed as Olivia King. Friends told The Commercial Appeal she was a widowed mother of three.
On Facebook, one of King’s sons, Wes King, posted about his mother’s death. He wrote that he had spoken to the trauma surgeon and learned his mother was shot in the chest.
“They tried to save her at the hospital to no avail,” he wrote. “I apologize for the graphic details, but this type of crime needs to stop being glossed over and sanitized. No one deserves this.”
3. Chris Pratt to act as Mario in Nintendo’s animated movie
Nintendo and Illumination, an American film and animation studio, are pairing up to produce a Mario movie to be released on Dec. 21, 2022. Chris Pratt is set to voice Mario, Jack Black to voice Bowser, Charlie Day to voice Luigi and Anya Taylor-Joy to voice Princess Peach, reports The Verge.
The cast is also composed of stars such as Seth Rogan playing Donkey Kong, Keegan Michael Key as Toad and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. The actor who has voiced Mario for over three decades will also appear for surprise cameos in the film.
Though announced in 2018, the public knows little about the film beyond the cast, the collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario, being involved as a producer; however, Nintendo announced the film’s directors will be Aaron Michael and Jelenic.
