Three things for September 15
1. Norm Macdonald, former ‘Saturday Night Live’ comic, dies at 61
Comedian Norm Macdonald, who wrote and performed for “Saturday Night Live” and wrote for the sitcom “Roseanne,” passed away on Tuesday due to cancer. Macdonald kept his condition private for nine years, according to his management team.
“There are so many things that we’ll miss about Norm — from his unflinching integrity to his generosity to his consistent ability to surprise,” said Lorne Michaels, SNL executive producer. “But most of all, he was just plain funny. No one was funny like Norm.”
Many fellow comedians shared their grief on social media to commemorate Macdonald.
2. Broadway reopens three hit shows
“The Lion King, “Hamilton” and “Wicked” are set to return to Broadway after an 18-month hiatus.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is allowing Broadway to welcome back audiences at full capacity on Sept. 14.
Ticket holders to all three shows must show proof of vaccination, and masks must be worn at all times except when eating or drinking in designated areas.
“We go to a theater for catharsis. Literally, that’s what we go for: to be in communion with each other, hear a story told in the dark, and experience catharsis,” said “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. “For a while, it wasn’t safe to do that. And it’s safe to come back now with the protocols we have in place.”
3. Lee University hosts SophoMORE picnic tomorrow
The Calling and Career Center is hosting a picnic to enrich sophomores’ experience while at Lee through a new program called the SophoMORE Experience.
It will be held on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 5:30 p.m. at Alumni Park.
There will be food and a free “Love Your Mama” t-shirt.
