Three things for February 1
1. Snowstorm batters Midwest
A slow-moving weather system has blanketed the Midwest in snow, with some locals seeing more snow than they’ve seen in years.
This snowstorm has the potential to cause blizzard-like conditions across the northeast over the coming days.
This week, the storm delayed hundreds of flights in the Midwest and continues on course to disrupt travel across the northeast.
On Sunday, Ohio, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania and Virginia saw snowfall, with New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts projected to begin seeing snow early Monday morning.
This storm is capable of bringing wind gusts up to 50 mph and a temperature as low as 20 degrees. States in the northeast could see up to a foot of snow overnight.
2. Tom Moore hospitalized with COVID-19
100-year-old World War II veteran Captain Tom Moore is hospitalized with COVID-19, according to his daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore.
Last year, Moore led extensive fundraising efforts across the UK to raise money to fight COVID-19, during which he raised $43 million.
In recent weeks, after battling a case of pneumonia, Moore tested positive for COVID-19.
On Sunday, he was admitted to the hospital with respiratory issues, but he is being treated in a ward rather than an intensive care unit.
3. Guitarist Hilton Valentine dies at age 77
Hilton Valentine, guitarist for The Animals and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, has died at the age of 77.
The cause of death was not given by his wife, Germaine Valentine, when he died on Friday, Jan. 29.
Valentine, best known for his opening riff in “The House of the Rising Sun,” was a founding member of the English rock band The Animals.
He was a member of the band for four years after “The House of the Rising Sun” hit the charts but moved on to lead a solo career.
Valentine eventually moved to Connecticut, where he formed the band Skiffledog.
