Three things for September 4
1. Hamilton County mask mandate extended another 30 days
On Thursday, Mayor Jim Coppinger of Hamilton County extended the mask mandate by another 30 days. The mandate, which was originally placed in Hamilton County starting in July, has now been renewed through Oct. 8.
“I ask the public to bear with us and remember that this is not going to be for the rest of your life,” said Coppinger. “We need your support.”
The extension comes following 78 deaths from COVID-19, in Hamilton County, in efforts to prevent further spread of the virus.
2. Police officer suspensions made in connection with the death of Daniel Prude
In Rochester, New York, seven police officers were suspended from duty on Thursday, as the officers had direct involvement with the death of Daniel Prude, according to AP News.
Daniel Prude, a 41-year-old black man was chased by seven police officers in Rochester in March 2019. Prude was caught by the officers, a hood was placed over his head to spot him from spitting as the officers held him down to the ground for two minutes.
Body camera footage was released on Wednesday at a news conference held by Prude’s family. The footage included a graphic depiction of Prude’s arrest, leading to the suspension of the officers involved by Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren.
“[Prude] was failed by the police department, our mental health care system, our society, and he was failed by me,” Warren said.
Warren was unaware of the police officer’s treatment of Prude until Aug. 4, according to AP News.
3. DeVos Rec Center offers free fitness classes through Sept. 10
The DeVos Rec Center is offering students a chance to experience their fitness classes for free through Sept. 10. Students can sign up for offered classes such as Zumba, Restore and Power Yoga and K30 through IM Leagues.
Spacing is limited due to COVID-19 restrictions and students must arrive early for a health screening. Information on how to register to use the recreation center can be found on the Rec Center website.
