Three things for October 6
1. Trump discharged from hospital following COVID-19 diagnosis
President Donald Trump was released from Walter Reed Medical Center on Monday.
Despite his return, Dr. Sean Conley, the president’s physician, stated Trump was not “out of the woods yet.”
Trump tweeted a video, urging Americans, “Don’t let [COVID] dominate you. Don’t be afraid of it. You’re going to beat it.”
The president’s statement was immediately criticized by many, including Dr. David Nace, a doctor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, who said, “We have to be realistic in this: COVID is a complete threat to the American population. Most of the people aren’t so lucky as the president.”
According to AP News, at least 13 people in Trump’s family and circle of advisers have reported testing positive for COVID-19.
2. CDC updates coronavirus guidelines
The Centers for Disease and Control updated their website on Monday to include information about cases where the disease can be spread through the air, even if the individuals involved were 6 feet apart.
“In these instances, transmission occurred in poorly ventilated and enclosed spaces that often involved activities that caused heavier breathing, like singing or exercise,” the CDC explained.
The CDC clarifies these kinds of transmissions are “limited, uncommon circumstances,” and the main way to catch the virus is through contact with someone who has the virus.
To help combat the spread of COVID-19, the CDC website states, “People can protect themselves from the virus that causes COVID-19 by staying at least 6 feet away from others, wearing a mask that covers their nose and mouth, washing their hands frequently, cleaning touched surfaces often and staying home when sick.”
3. Regal to temporarily close all US locations
On Monday, Regal revealed all U.S. theaters would be temporarily closed.
CEO of Cineworld, Mooky Greidinger stated, “This is not a decision we made lightly, and we did everything in our power to support a safe and sustainable reopening in the U.S … We are especially grateful for and proud of the hard work our employees put in to adapt our theatres to the new protocols and cannot underscore enough how difficult this decision was.”
The closures come two months after Regal began reopening locations in August, and the decision will affect 40,000 employees.
The closures will begin on Thursday, Oct. 8, and the reopening date is to be determined.
