Three things for October 1
1. Commission on Presidential Debates announces changes for future debates
Following the first 2020 presidential debate on Tuesday night, the Commission on Presidential Debates released a statement, considering changes for the next two debates.
“Last night’s debate made clear that additional structure should be added to the format of the remaining debates to ensure a more orderly discussion of the issues,” the commission explained on Wednesday.
The statement comes after previously arranged rules of interrupting an opponent's speaking time were repeatedly broken on Tuesday’s debate.
2. Disney to lay off 28,000 workers
On Tuesday, Disney confirmed the company was laying off 28,000 of its employees, admitting it could not continue to grant a leave of absence or provide health benefits to the furloughed employees.
In an email to Disney workers, Josh D'Amaro, chairman of Disney’s Parks, Experiences and Products division, said, “As heartbreaking as it is to take this action, this is the only feasible option we have in light of the prolonged impact of COVID-19 on our business, including limited capacity due to physical distancing requirements and the continued uncertainty regarding the duration of the pandemic.”
The layoff will impact those who work in theme parks, retail stores and Disney Cruise Line.
3. Major League Baseball announces limited in-person seating for World Series
On Wednesday, Major League Baseball announced fans will be allowed to attend the World Series in person.
The MLB stated that both the National League Champion Series and World Series would provide limited in-person seating.
Each game will be held at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas, and 11,500 tickets will be offered. The stadium normally holds up to 40,518 people.
Fans can purchase their tickets on October 6.
