Three things for January 29
1. U.S. Military personnel diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries following Iranian missile attacks
Following the Iranian missile attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq, up to 50 U.S. service members have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries and concussions, according to a statement released by the Pentagon on Tuesday.
This is an increase of 16 from last week’s statement from the Pentagon, which stated 34 service members had been diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries.
The statement later added that out of the 50 diagnosed, 31 were treated in Iraq and have since returned to duty.
2. Coronavirus continues to spread
The deadly Wuhan coronavirus continues to spread across the globe with 6,056 confirmed cases — 5,974 of those being from China.
China has implemented several temporary travel bans among cities with confirmed cases to quarantine the virus. There are also ongoing efforts to help manage the overcrowded hospitals.
The United States and Japan have already flown citizens out of Wuhan, and other countries like Australia, South Korea, France and more have begun to make plans to get their citizens out as well.
3. Mattel reveals ‘most diverse doll-line’ yet
On Tuesday, Mattel released its latest additions to the Barbie Fashionistas line, which now includes a doll with no hair, a doll with vitiligo, dolls with darker skin tones, dolls with prosthetics and many more diverse designs.
To ensure the designs were accurate, Mattel consulted a dermatologist for the doll with vitiligo, and the company also collaborated with disability activist Jordan Reeves for the doll with prosthetics. The popular brand began introducing more “diverse dolls” in 2015 and since have created over 170 different designs to show there is more than one type of beauty.
“Barbie is continuing the journey to represent global diversity and inclusivity in the fashion doll aisle by showcasing a multi-dimensional view of beauty and fashion,” a spokesperson for Mattel told CBS News.
