Three things for August 27
1. Trump to deploy troops to Kenosha
Following the police shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake on Sunday, President Trump announced that federal law enforcement and National Guard troops will be sent to the town of Kenosha, Wis. in response to the protests targeting police brutality.
On Wednesday, Wisconsin authorities announced that a 17-year-old was taken into custody and charged with homicide for his involvement in the deaths of two people. Both fatalities were the result of gunfire during the overnight protests.
Unlike other recent high-profile cases of police brutality in the U.S. — such as the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor — Blake survived the encounter.
According to Blake’s family attorney, Benjamin Crump, the gunshot wounds he received left him paralyzed.
2. Postmaster General testifies before the House
United States Postmaster General Louis Dejoy testified before the House on Monday, where he defended the U.S. Postal Service’s recent implementation of cost-cutting measures.
Dejoy stated that the Postal Service will halt the operational changes, including the removal of postal boxes and elimination of postal workers’ overtime, until the conclusion of the 2020 election.
3. Jamie Lynn Spears files to oversee Britney Spears’ assets
On Tuesday, The Los Angeles Times reported that 29-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears — former star of the Nickelodeon show “Zoey 101” and younger sister to pop musician Britney Spears — submitted a court filing last week, designating her as the trustee of her older sister’s estate.
According to The Los Angeles Times, Britney Spears has not had full control over her business affairs since her public unraveling in January of 2008. Spears was 26 at the time of her publicized crisis.
A Superior Court commissioner placed Britney Spears and her estate under temporary conservatorship a day after the pop star was taken to a psychiatric hospital in 2008. Since then, her estate has been the subject of many court cases and familial claims.
