Three things for August 26
1. Republican National Convention taking place this week
The Republican National Convention (RNC) kicked off this week in Charlotte, North Carolina. The convention was held virtually, with speakers tuning in from across the country.
During the first night of the convention, the Republican Party formally renominated President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence for a second term. Tuesday’s speakers consisted of Donald Trump Jr., former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Senator Tim Scott, among others.
The convention continues Wednesday night, with speakers such as former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, Eric Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
The RNC is available live on C-SPAN at 9 p.m EDT.
The Democratic National Convention (DNC) took place last week, with speakers such as former President Barack Obama, U.S. Representative for New York’s 14th congressional district Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former First Lady Michelle Obama expressing their opinions on the state of the county and election.

2. Hurricane Laura to hit Gulf Coast
With Tropical Storm Marco out of the way, the Gulf Coast is preparing for Hurricane Laura. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has projected Laura will become a Category 3 major hurricane before landfall, with winds of around 115 mph.
Hurricane and storm surge warnings have been issued for portions of the Texas and Louisiana coasts, evacuating thousands from their homes.
“If you decide to stay, you’re staying on your own,” Port Arthur Mayor Thurman Bartie said, according to USA Today.
Hurricane Laura has now emerged into the Gulf of Mexico, where it is predicted to strengthen due to the low wind shear and warm ocean water.
Additionally, the hurricane is expected to bring a massive storm surge of Gulf seawater ashore, forecasters warned, potentially as high as 13 feet near the Texas and Louisiana border.

3. Black Student Union hosting their first virtual meeting
The Black Student Union (BSU) will be hosting their first virtual meeting for the fall semester today at 8:30 p.m. via zoom.
Throughout the extended break, the BSU has been active on social media, sharing information with club members and followers through personal videos, informational posts and Instagram stories.
Now, the club is back on campus and ready to continue promoting unity while amplifying Black — and other minority — voices.
