Three things for April 6
1. Oprah Winfrey donates $10 million to COVID-19 relief
Oprah Winfrey has joined hands with other celebrities to provide for coronavirus relief efforts. Winfrey announced on Thursday she donated $10 million to help fight the pandemic.
“I was struck by the work these organizations are doing and while everyone’s priority right now is to stay safer at home, I know there are many of us looking for ways to help,” said Winfrey in an Instagram post.
According to CNN, $1 million from Winfrey’s fund will be donated to a new initiative called America’s Food Fund, and the rest will go toward other groups supporting relief efforts.
2. Tiger at Bronx Zoo tests positive for COVID-19
Nadia, a four-year-old Malayan tiger, tested positive for COVID-19 this weekend after she was cared for by an asymptomatic staff member. The USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed this after Nadia, three other tigers and three African lions developed a dry cough.
Bronx Zoo chief veterinarian Dr. Paul Calle wrote in a statement on Twitter, “The COVID-19 testing that was performed on our Malayan tiger Nadia was performed in a veterinary school laboratory and is not the same test as is used for people. You cannot send human samples to the veterinary laboratory, and you cannot send animal tests to the human laboratory, so there is no competition for testing between these very different situations.”
The big cats are all expected to recover, according to the Bronx Zoo.
3. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson hospitalized
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was taken to a hospital on Sunday after living under quarantine in his Downing Street residence. Johnson was diagnosed with COVID-19 on March 26, according to AP News.
According to a statement from Johnson’s office, his admission to an undisclosed London hospital was a “precautionary step.” The UK currently has 47,806 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 4,932 reported deaths.
