Three things for April 2
1. Georgia governor orders statewide shelter-in-place
On Wednesday, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced at a press conference he is issuing a shelter-in-place order for the state of Georgia from Friday, April 3 to April 13. Additionally, Kemp signed an executive order, closing K-12 schools for the rest of the academic year.
Georgia has over 4,600 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with around 140 deaths. Kemp emphasized the exact stipulations of the order will be released on April 2 and will include exemptions for grocery stores, medical supplies and some manufactures.
“I want to encourage my fellow Georgians to hang in there. I know you’re tired of this, but we must first overcome the obstacles in our path,” Kemp said.
2. British man runs marathon in his backyard, raises $30,000 for Britain’s National Health Service
For his 32nd birthday, James Campbell promised his Twitter followers that if he got over 10,000 retweets he would run a marathon in his backyard. Campbell live-streamed his run and has since raised over £24,900 (around $30,000) for the U.K.’s National Health Service to combat the pandemic.
Campbell completed his run in a little over five hours by running back and forth across a 20-foot stretch 7,000 times to reach his goal of 26.2 miles.
3. Power Ranger hands out toilet paper and cash at Georgia Walmart
On Monday, a Power Ranger in Moultrie, Georgia was seen handing out toilet paper and money to random Walmart shoppers in an effort to bring joy to customers during the pandemic.
Roberto Fernandez is a father of two who told WALB News he was simply, “helping people out.”
“I was reading that some people lost their jobs and because of all the coronavirus thing going on. So I just thought a little bit of money would also help them out,” said Fernandez. “I gain peace of mind because I’m like, I had some toilet paper in the house and it just bothered me that there were people without toilet paper. I don’t really gain nothing off this except peace of mind. It makes me feel great.”
