Convocation Preview: Vessels
Lee’s spring convocation services begin Sunday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center. President Paul Conn will kick-off the series of the week titled “Vessels.”
“[We are] very much wanting to convey to the student body, and to the faculty and staff as well, what it really means to be a vessel of God’s glory and God’s grace,” said Campus Pastor Rob Fultz. “That changes not only our world but the world around us.”
Pastor Tony Stewart will speak on Monday evening. Stewart is the senior pastor of Citylife Church in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. He previously served as Chairman of the Executive Council of Eighteen for the Church of God in Cleveland. Along with his pastoral responsibilities, Pastor Stewart now travels and speaks all over the world.
On Tuesday, Feb. 11, Mo Isom will return to Lee to speak in both the morning and evening services. Isom is a New York Times bestselling author and a faith-based blogger and speaker. As a former All-American soccer goalkeeper, she was the first woman to have trained with and try out for an SEC men’s football team. According to Isom, the goal of her ministry is to courageously communicate the Gospel with raw authenticity, compassion and fresh revelation.
Dr. Mark Walker, Lee’s President-Elect, will speak on Wednesday evening. Walker currently serves as vice president for ministerial development and chair of Lee’s Department of Christian Ministries. Prior to joining Lee’s administration, Walker served as the senior pastor of Mount Paran North Church of God in Marietta, Georgia and served as a member of the Lee University Board of Directors.
Convocation will conclude Thursday morning with two separate services. Kingdom Players will perform in the Conn Center. Kingdom Players is Lee’s traveling drama team, directed by Michael Delbonis.
“We are looking forward to seeing how the student body responds to our worship,” said Kingdom Player Sydney Brown, a junior studio art major. “We haven’t performed for a chapel service in several years, so we’re all pretty excited about it!”
Dr. Ana Alves Shippey will be speaking in the Dixon Center at the same time. Dr. Shippey has been at Lee as an associate professor of political science since 2013. She is involved in organizing the Constitution Bowl at Lee, along with yearly celebrations for International Women’s Day.
“God can change your life with one word in one moment,” said Walker. “That can happen in convocation. Why would you want to miss that?”
All students and faculty are welcome to convocation this Sunday through Thursday. The doors open at 6:30 p.m., and worship begins at 7:30 p.m.
Overflow seating will be available in the Dixon Center. Dixon Center services will have live worship, followed by a video feed of the sermon.
Services will be available for livestream viewing. For more information about this and other chapel events, contact the Campus Ministry office at (423) 614-8420 or campusministries@leeuniversity.edu.
