Three things for November 25
1. Record breaking opening of ‘Frozen 2’
The much anticipated sequel to the animated film ‘Frozen’ broke records becoming the highest grossing animated film globally. Bringing back the voices of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad, the star-studded film has high stakes to live up to the glory of its predecessor.
The original ‘Frozen’ grossed nearly $1.3 billion in theatres. ‘Frozen 2’ broke the grounds for animation with a $350 million worldwide opening.
2. Taylor Swift named Artist of the Decade at the 2019 American Music Awards
“All any of the artists, or really anyone in this room wants, is to create something that will last,” Taylor Swift said in her acceptance speech of Artist of the Decade at the Sunday night 2019 American Music Awards (AMAs).
Swift holds the record over any female artist for the most AMA wins and has claimed other wins over the decade on top of that as well, breaking Michael Jackson’s record of 24 AMA wins.
On top of the win, Swift also performed six of her songs in a medley. The performance follows a public dispute with her former record label, Big Machine Label Group, for preventing her from singing her songs that predated her seventh album released this year, ‘Lover.’
3. Koalas currently considered vulnerable to extinction
Since the Australian bushfire season began in August, over 80 percent of the koala’s habitat has been destroyed.
Currently, over 1,000 koalas have been killed in the inferno. According to experts, this has left koalas to become what is called “functionally extinct.”
Functional extinction is the term used when a population of a species becomes so limited in numbers that they no longer have a viable population or play a significant role in their ecosystem. There is currently a proposed Koala Protection Act that lawmakers in Australia have been trying to push through since 2016.
