Flames roll over Auburn Montgomery

On Feb. 16, the Lady Flames and Flames defeated Auburn Montgomery (AUM) in front of a rowdy home crowd at the Walker Arena.
The Lady Flames won 84-46 in a dominating performance. Junior Abby Bertram led with 20 points in 19 minutes and junior Becca Cheeks pulled down 7 rebounds.
Junior Taylor Boggess began the game on a tear, scoring all 11 of her points in the first quarter and playing stifling defense as the Lady Flames jumped out to an early lead.
In the second quarter, the Lady Flames pushed the pedal even further. On one possession, freshman Haley Schubert leaped to block a shot en route to forcing a shot-clock violation. She explained that defense helps to glue everything together.
“Playing defense really helps get my other teammates a chance to steal the ball,” said Schubert. “Coach always says, ‘defense leads to offense,’ and once our defense gets going, that motivates us.”
The Lady Flames were very motivated, holding AUM to 5 points as they raced to a 50-14 halftime lead. They coasted the rest of the game to a 38-point victory.
The Flames, on the other hand, had a battle for most of the game, even with all five starters scoring in double digits. AUM used a swarming, aggressive press throughout the game that put heavy pressure on the Flames point guards.
Junior guard Parker Suedekum and senior guard Cody Jones minimized the threat by finding passing lanes to open three-pointers.
Freshman Quay Kennedy scored all 10 of his points in the first half, and he shot 3-5 from three-point range.

Both teams have crucial upcoming games as the Lady Flames attempt to go 2-0 against the number six team in the nation and the Flames fight for Gulf South Conference tournament positioning.
