Freshman standout Alex Butler has helped the Lee Flames baseball team keep a steady pace in the Gulf South Conference (GSC) this season. The right-handed pitcher has fit right into the Flame’s rotation and has made a name for himself, already earning multiple GSC weekly honors.

Butler, a mathematics major from Chattanooga, Tennessee, began playing baseball when he was young. While there were multiple athletic outlets he could have chosen, baseball seemed to feel the most natural, and pitching seemed the best position.

“I played several sports, but I stuck with baseball, and it became my sport,” Butler said. “It was pretty clear for me early on that I was going to be best at pitching, so I stuck with it.”

In Butler's first start of the season on the Flames, he pitched 6.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts, while giving up only four hits and one walk in a 1-0 win over Lindenwood (MO). Since then, Butler has a 2-2 record over ten starts, with an earned run average of 5.00.

Butler has high hopes for the Flames baseball team this year and for the future.

“As a team, we want to make the conference tournament this year,” said Butler. “Personally, I want to get better overall and to have at least some sort of championship ring for baseball.”
