All welcomed to join Intramural basketball teams
When the Walker Arena is not packed out for a Lee Flames basketball game, intramural basketball takes over the court on weekday nights.
The stands are still filled with excited fans, and you still find passionate players on the court, despite not being the typical basketball game experience.
Junior accounting major Hayes Binkley said that playing intramural sports creates opportunities to meet new people.
“It’s fun, and I get to hang out with guys that I don’t normally get to hang out with,” said Binkley.
According to Binkley, the ability to play organized games in the Walker Arena one or two nights a week is a draw for students as well.
“It’s a lot more fun, and it’s better than playing at the rec center,” said Binkley. “[Since] it’s an actual arena…it feels like a bigger deal.”
Freshman business major Jackson Bell, current forward for Lee’s men’s basketball team, said that watching intramurals is enjoyable.
“It’s fun to watch,” said Bell. “People get to come out here and showcase their talent.”
Sophomore accounting major Noah Cowart is a referee for intramural basketball and said that although the bigger games in tournaments can be stressful at times, most of the games are fun and more laid back.
Cowart encouraged anyone who is interested in intramurals to sign up.
“Just come out and have fun,” said Cowart. “Come see us; come play.”
Intramural basketball playoffs are underway in Walker Arena, so be sure to watch your peers shoot their shot.
