SPORTS BRIEF: Flames fall in final seconds to UTC
It was a tough exhibition loss to open up the season for coach Bubba Smith and the Flames basketball team. The Division I Chattanooga Mocs overcame the Flames by a score of 62-60 in the final seconds of the contest.
Offensively, both the Flames and Mocs had their share of miscues, leading to a slower paced contest. However, the game did not disappoint due to the constant lead changes between these two programs.
Senior guard Cody Jones began his season with eight points, including a go-ahead basket with just over a minute to go.
The final Flames basket was not enough to overcome the Mocs, as they scored twice, capped by a game-winning layup with 2.5 seconds remaining.
The game was a gut-check for the Flames. While the Mocs put together a strong game, Jones thinks the Flames are not far off from greatness.
“We know as a team that we have the potential to be a better team this year,” Jones said. “We also understand that for us to achieve that potential we must push each other every day in practice, while continuing to improve and not take anyone or anything for granted.”
The Flames will face Embry-Riddle University on Friday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m. in Walker Arena.
