LEEWIND: Believe it or not, there is a space for you
LEEWIND is a weekly series by the Lee Clarion featuring a story from our archives to celebrate Lee's Centennial.
Sept. 24, 1998—Contrary to popular belief, there are available parking spaces at Lee University. Many students end up being ten minutes late for class because they've been driving around and around looking for somewhere to park. The problem is they haven't been looking in the right spot.
Believe it or not, there are actually four new parking lots on campus. Right behind the North Cleveland Towers there are two brand new and rarely used lots. The lot at "The House" has been enlarged for student parking, and the lot between the Watkins Building and Livingston Hall has also been expanded. That adds an extra 200 parking spaces for the Lee community.
Believe it or not, Lee University has better parking options, with a 1.2 parking ratio, when compared to other schools. When asked about campus parking Virgil Clark, head of Campus Safety, said, "we are a growing university. The larger we grow the farther you have to walk to go to class. We are no longer a small campus."
Lee University Campus Safety tries to keep a good working relationship with the Cleveland Police Department but beware, the city can and will issue a $95 ticket to cars parked illegally in handicapped spots on the university property.
The parking lots behind each residence hall are for the residents of those dorms only. The parking spaces on the outskirts of each of the classroom buildings are for faculty and staff. Cars parked in those spaces without the proper parking permit or parked in dorm lots will be ticketed. If a car does not have a permit and is not registered with the school, it will be booted.
At the start of the semester Campus Safety issued 160-170 warnings to the student body. Now that the semester is in full swing, they are having to ticket cars on a daily basis. The publicizing of the newly added lots will hopefully alleviate future parking problem disasters.
