The Lady Flames Basketball Team on Regular Season
The Lady Flames earned their spot in the Gulf South Conference (GSC) tournament after a match against Mississippi College, which they won 61-60.
This season the Lady Flames faced the difficulty of having a young team but still had freshman players that put points on the board and guided the team to close victories.
“It’s all a learning process for [the team],” Head Coach Marty Rowe said. “We just have to rely on each other and hope that they continue to pull together as a group.”
This season, Junior Carrie Cheeks earned Player of the Week in December. Taylor Boggess, Lindsey Roddy and Abby Bertram all earned Freshman of the Week. Bertram herself earned the honor five times this year.
“[Bertram] is very talented and continues to get better and better everyday,” Coach Rowe said.
The Lady Flames finished their regular season 14-8 in their conference and 20-9 overall. They had a seven game win streak that started in the week of November 16 and ended in the week of December 28.
“We’ve had a lot of close games this season. Some have gone our way and some haven’t,” Junior Erin Walsh said. “Every game is a fight. You can’t take any game lightly in this conference.”
Bertram believes that the team needs to build up their defense in order to create more opportunities to score.
“Once we get our defense up, our offense will come,” Bertram said.
The Lady Flames won their first game in the GSC Tournament against Union University. Their victory was followed by close losses against Valdosa State University and Eckred College, ending their playoff season.
“In the next couple years I think we will be the best team in the conference,” Bertram said.
