Two Lee students have each received Newton D. Becker scholarships totaling to over $5,000.

Olawale Arewa, one of the award recipients, currently holds a degree in Business Administration and Management from Lee and is furthering his education by earning a degree in Accounting to pursue his dream of being a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

“Being a Newton D. Becker scholarship recipient is an enormous honor," Arewa said. "With this scholarship I will have the resources and tools available to prepare for the CPA exam and achieve my goal of becoming a CPA that will advance my career and take it to the next level.”

This year, Becker Professional Education, a global leader in professional education and a part of DeVry Education Group, announced more than $450,000 in scholarships which has been awarded to individuals who show an ongoing dedication to earning a CPA credential and furthering their accounting careers.

More 240 students around the nation have been awarded full or partial scholarships for Becker's CPA Exam Review through the annual Newton D. Becker Scholarship Program, according to a media release.

“We are truly honored to provide nearly a half million in scholarship funds this year to candidates pursuing their CPA credential, as we know it will positively impact their careers and help to further establish them as leaders in their field,” said Steve Gradman, vice president and general manager of U.S. Accounting at Becker Professional Education.

Recipients will be able to use the money towards earning their CPA credential – a dream that is often far out of reach if they don’t have the financial resources to assist their journey.

In order to qualify for the scholarship, applicants had to be an accounting professional or student, demonstrate financial need in preparing for the CPA exam, and, through a personal statement, exhibit traits important to Newton Becker: high moral character, strong leadership qualities and commitment to community service, according to Becker's website.

The scholarship program was created in honor of Newton D. Becker, after he passed away in 2012, to continue his legacy of helping bright, dedicated students and professionals fulfill their dreams by earning the CPA credential and furthering their accounting careers. Newton began Becker Professional Education in 1957 when he pioneered a new approach to prepare candidates for the CPA Exam.
