Lady Flames' basketball battles Shorter University for the rights to third place in the Gulf South Conference (GSC) on Thursday, Feb. 25. It is the final regular season game for both the Flames and the Hawks.
Both teams go into the game tied for third in the GSC with a 15-6 conference record. The winner will clinch home court advantage for their school for the first round of the conference tournament, which is on Tuesday, March 2.
'The top five teams in this conference are so close, and it shows you that just one game really is that important,' Lady Flames Head Coach Marty Rowe said. 'We look forward to the challenge of going down there and seeing what happens.'
The Lady Flames beat Shorter in what turned out to be a run-away game at home earlier in the season with a final score of 64-48.
However, Rowe believes the result of one game in January does little to help anyone predict the result of a match-up a month later.
'[Beating Shorter in January] means nothing,' Rowe said. 'This league is so balanced that if you run into the wrong team at the wrong time then you're always going to have your hands full.'
The Lady Flames will be traveling to Rome, Georgia Thursday night to face Shorter University on their home court. Shorter has only lost two of their 12 home games this season.
Erin Walsh, leading scorer for the Flames averaging over 17 points-per-game for the season, said Shorter is never an easy win, whether at home or away.
'I think it'll be a tough game,' Walsh said. 'We definitely will have to be ready to play.'
