Weekend Update 10/3
The Flames athletic teams return to classes today after an eventful weekend consisting of a tennis invitational, two wins each for the men's and women's soccer teams and a win and a loss for the volleyball team, while the men's and women's cross country teams placed 15th and 7th in their respective meets.
The Devos Tennis Center was filled with players this weekend for the Lee University tennis invitational. The men’s tennis team hosted Tennessee Wesleyan University and the University of West Alabama on Friday Sept. 30 and Saturday Oct. 1. Freshman Igor Schattan went undefeated in singles, as well as in doubles with his partner, Rhys Milne. Teodor Deljanovski, also a freshman, won two out of three matches in singles. Sophomore Jordan Knott and senior Westly Lemke also scored wins in their singles matches for the Flames.
The Lady Flames soccer team traveled to Memphis, Tennessee on October 1 to defeat the Pirates of Christian Brothers 2-0. The score was double zeros until the second half when sophomore,Lauren Peters took her shot at the 13th minute with an assist from senior McKenzie Ricker. Peters made the Flames’ second goal in the 86th minute unassisted. The Flames are now ranked sixth in the NCAA Division II.
The Lady Flames went on to get a one-goal victory against host Union University on Sunday Oct. 2. Senior Kinsey Chichowitz took an assist from senior Summer Lanter for the game-winning goal.
The men’s soccer team also battled the Pirates this weekend and garnered a 2-1 win in Memphis. An assist from Sophomore Drew Jackson gave senior captain, Quade Marinell, his fifth goal of the season and the Flames their first goal of the match. Freshman Samaan Williams followed his captain with an assist from Arturo Rocha for a 2-0 advantage over the Pirates and an eventual win the night of Sept. 30.
The men finished up on Oct. 2 with a 3-0 win against Union University. Jackson scored his fourth goal of the season with an assist from senior and captain, David Perez. The teams both fired off competing shots until Perez ended the battle with a goal in the 80th minute. Sophomore Jose Orellana came behind Perez 2 minutes later with the Flames’ third winning goal.
The women’s volleyball team traveled to Carrollton, Georgia this weekend to take on the University of West Georgia. The Flames took a 3-0 loss after trying to make a comeback from the first match. Silvia Satori lead the team in kills with 13 and Brooke Wilsman was close behind with 12.
Finding that comeback attitude yet again, the volleyball team defeated the University of West Alabama on home court the afternoon of Oct 1. A vocal crowd in the Walker Arena provided the boost the team needed to make a 3-0 win. Junior Sadie Johnson, set the team up for success with 19 assists. Satori had 13 kills, and Wilsman followed with ten.
It was a competitive weekend for the cross country teams. The Greater Louisville Classic hosted 33 men’s teams, including top ranked NCAA I and II competitors. The men’s cross country team placed 15th. Freshman Christian Noble, placed 25th out of 312, and was first to finish for the Flames. Seth Eagleson came behind Noble in 52nd place.
The Louisville Classic hosted 48 women’s teams. While There were more runners on the women's course compared to the men’s, the Lady Flames were not up against DI teams and were able to place 7th. Junior Audrey Smith, was first for the Flames, coming in fifth out of 406 runners. Sophomore Amy Carpenter, was next, holding the 26th spot.
