Vision Dance Ministry shares Gospel through art
Senior Seika Kang had a vision from God when she was only 11 to form a ministry dance team, and has worked hard to do that at Lee University.
'This is what I am called to do,' Kang said.
Kang said she began Vision Dance Ministry last year at Lee, and has managed to book several churches for performances, despite conservative Christian stigmas about dance.
The group invited experienced and inexperienced dancers alike to audition this semester, accepting two. The team is now comprised of eight total members who are rehearsing for upcoming performances and a possible competition.
One of Vision Dance Ministry's recent additions to the team is junior Natalie Gonzales.
'I love their vision.' Gonzales said. 'I admire their love for worshiping the king and their passion for winning souls.'
Vision Dance Ministry specializes in interpretive dance and human videos, which are stories set to music.
'The group uses group choreography to create visuals with [their] bodies,' Kang said.
'Kingdom Players does mostly drama and Unity entails ballet and contemporary dance,' Kang said.
Kang explained that her vision was hard to get off the ground at first, attributing the slow start to the conservatism of many of the surrounding churches that were were hesitant to welcome a group billed as a 'dance ministry.'
Dean of Students and Sponsor of Vision Dance Ministry Allen McClung spoke of Kang's resilience in spite of this obstacle.
'She's one that has real vision,' McClung said. 'She pressed ahead even when things were going slow.'
Kang was able to secure a few churches and is excited to add more churches to the list this semester.
Vision Dance Ministry will be competing at the "Dance in His Name" praise dance showcase and competition in Memphis, Tenn. on March 13. For more information about upcoming performances or how to get involved, contact lee.visiondance@gmail.com.
