Lee Volleyball's Dynamic Duo
With the game on the line, Lee University’s volleyball team can always count on players Silvia Satori and Brooke Wilsman, who are currently the top leaders in kills this season.
Wilsman is a junior who averages about two kills per set, a set being played to 25 points. Satori averages 3 kills per set. Both Wilsman and Satori have worked very hard to push themselves to come back in shape and ready to play this season, according to Wilsman.
“The training we put in has helped us play our best, because we put in the work and we can trust our bodies to keep working hard” Wilsman said.
Satori, a redshirt junior, said that teamwork has helped lead the team. With Volleyball being a team sport, nothing would be possible without the “help of having your teammates.” Satori believes that in order for a kill to be possible, a good set and a great pass need to be made.
Senior and teammate Blaire Beamer said the two women have different strengths but mix well together. They might not set the ball up for each other, but they do what they can wherever they are on the court to set up a kill.
“Silvia is a put away hitter. She hits the ball hard,” Beamer said, “and Brooke is a strategic hitter. She’s stronger mentally.”
Volleyball head coach Andrea Hudson said she is not surprised Satori and Wilsman are her leaders in kills, as they are the team's outside hitters.
“They are really stepping up for the team and performing well right now,” Hudson said.
Hudson believes it is the women’s position on the court that allows them to make so many runs that they turn into kills. Though Hudson believes their position helps, she also knows the women work very hard to get those kills for the team.
“I feel like it's expected from our position,” Satori said.
Satori and Wilsman focus on kills, how to “mix up shots” and “scoring around the block” everyday in practice, according to Satori.
Wilsman said she feels a sense of pressure to help lead the team, but she and Satori have worked hard to achieve their positions as top killers. Though Wilsman and Satori are already the kill leaders for the team, Wilsman said they don’t stop pushing themselves.
“We will keep hitting hard and accomplishing more of our goals to help the team succeed” said Wilsman.
