Lee Golfer Gets GSC Player of the Month
Lee’s Shea Sylvester was awarded with the title of Gulf South Conference(GSC) player of the month.
The senior from Roswell, Ga., has placed in the top five in all three of Lee’s fall, 2016 matches, including a first place win at the Montevallo Invitational. Shooting under par in 2 of those matches, along with good scores, set Sylvester up with a cozy position as number one for the month, in the GSC.
“It feels great to have that recognition but still got my head on what we’ve got coming up,” Sylvester said.
Sylvester hadn’t won a tournament since his days in high school and said he is grateful for the momentum the win at Montevallo has given him.
After struggling over his putting, Sylvester said he put his mind to relaxing on the course. He was focused on the results of the put, whether it was going in or not. Now, he keeps his head down and focuses on his stroke. He said this helped him diminish doubts he had about his playing, and ultimately clean up his game.
“He's one of the top players in the country,” Head coach, John Maupin said in an interview with George Starr.
Sylvester said he has been waiting for this moment. After putting in hard work and not seeing the results he wanted, he said he knew, one day, it would “click.”
Sylvester said feels he has “earned” the position he is in. However he is excited to keep moving forward. He is looking forward to playing stronger fields and more tournaments in the Spring, 2017 season.
The men’s golf team is currently ranked ninth in the nation and has their final tournament of the fall season, Monday and Tuesday 17,18.
