Weekend sports wrap-up
This weekend was busy for the Flames of Lee as the baseball and softball teams were both at home taking on Shorter University and the men and women's tennis teams were in Memphis, TN taking on Delta State in conference play.
The main event of the weekend was the men and women's basketball team competing for an NCCAA National Championship.
The men's basketball team earned a #1 seed going into the tournament and faced Crowley's Ridge College. The Flames came back from a three-point deficit at halftime to win 63-61 in round one.
The semifinals, for the Flames did not go as well. The Flames found themselves down by 16 at halftime and could not claw their way back into the game, losing to Colorado Christian 88-74.
The Flames went on to play in a consolation game against Emmanuel College where they lost 78-65. The Flames finished the tournament in fourth place overall.
The Lady Flames played three games in Winona Lake, Indiana and outscored their opponents by 69 points on their way to winning an NCCAA National Championship.
The Lady Flames played Southwestern Assemblies of God University in their first round game. They jumped out to a 17 point lead in the first half and never looked back, winning 75-52.
The Lady Flames played Emmanuel College in the semifinal game. Lee was in control the whole game after having a 14 point lead in the first half and winning 54-44.
The championship game against Bethesda University of California proved to be the Flames highest scoring game and their shooting was just too much for Bethesda. The Lady Flames won 95-59 behind 27 points from both freshman Carrie Cheeks and junior Kayla Beavers. Beavers hit 9 threes to set an NCCAA National Tournament record.
The baseball team was at home this weekend against Shorter University. After winning their first matchup 10-9, the Flames lost two straight to lose the three game series. The Flames lost 3-1 in the second game and 1-0 in the final game of the series.
The softball team also played Shorter University at home this weekend. The Lady Flames won the first two games of the series 3-2 and 5-2; they lost the final game of the series 3-1.
Both the men and women's tennis teams were on the road in Memphis playing Delta State.
The men lost their conference matchup 5-1 and the women also lost their matchup 5-3. They also had an away game against Christian Brothers that got cancelled due to bad weather.
They have a home matchup midweek against the University of North Alabama on March 25.
