Sports weekend wrap-up
While all of Lee University is getting back in the swing of things and just starting classes, Lee Flames athletics, especially men's and women's basketball, is getting into the heart of their season.
The cheerleading team had their first competition of the year in the UCA Nationals at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex Jan. 25-26. This national competition was the first national competition the Lady Flames have ever competed in. They competed in the small co-ed Division II NCAA and they placed fifth overall. The Lady Flames Cheerleading Head Coach Marty Rowe said that this competition was very good for the Flames to grow and to continue to improve the cheerleading program at Lee University.
The women's basketball team had a three-day road trip this weekend. They traveled to Union University on Thursday to take on the Bulldogs. Despite beating them earlier in the season the Lady Flames could not sweep the Bulldogs on Friday. They lost 49-63 after falling behind by 13 in the first half.
Freshman forward Shelby Brown led the Lady Flames with 14 points while freshman guard Emileigh Swafford had 11 points.
The Lady Flames then traveled to Memphis, Tennessee to take on Christian Brothers University. The Lady Flames bounced back from their loss on Thursday with a 69-57 win over the Bucs.
Junior forward Christina Johnson led the Lady Flames in their win with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Swafford once again helped the Lady Flames with 17 points.
The men's basketball team also had a three-day trip that started with a trip to Jackson, Tennessee to take on Union University. The Flames also beat the Bulldogs previously in the season but failed to win on the road as they lost 75-94.
The Flames had four players in double digits as sophomore Chase Cullen led the team with 14 points and team leading seven points.
The Flames then traveled to Memphis, Tennessee to take on the Bucs of Christian Brothers University. The Flames could not overcome a first half deficit of 16 points and they lost 55-76. Cullen once again led the Flames with 20 points and 8 rebounds on %70 shooting.
The Flames and Lady Flames come home for two games on Jan. 29 and 31. The Flames look to end their 7-game losing streak against the University of West Florida or Valdosta State University.
