A new take on the day for lovers

This year, rather than setting up heart-shaped posters, or auctioning off dates, the resident assistants of Atkins-Ellis hall are throwing a Galentine's Day event. Feb. 17 the girls of A-E will be dressing in their Sunday best to enjoy an evening of hot coffee and desserts.

Resident assistant Georgia Wright said the idea to do Galentine's Day was to give A-E girls a night that doesn't focus on love and dating, but where we can love on our girls and love them for who they are.

The NBC network series Parks and Recreation originally coined Galentine's day. Amy Poehler's character on Parks and Recreation throws the Galentine's day event for her friends every year. At the event there are gifts exchanged, lots of love but no boys allowed.

At A-E's version of Galentines's Day there will be coffee, desserts, a photo booth, music and giveaways but no boys allowed.

With so many events hosted to celebrate the love within an intimate relationship, Galentine's Day is an event which allows girls to feel good about themselves, whether they have a date or not.

Galentine's Day celebrates being an independent female and the love friends can show for each other.

Atkins-Ellis Resident, Elliot Warner was in charge of making the invitations.

'It's exciting to have an event that's not a meeting, so I can get to know people on the hall. It's also fun to dress up and hang with people with desserts,' Warner said.

Wright expects 100 girls to attend the event. She said Galentine's day is not just a day for single girls; it's a day for everyone to dress up and have fun.
