The Basketball Bonanza welcomed back the student body at the beginning of January, offering cash prizes, cheap food and a festive atmosphere with their 3-point contest.
The Bonanza brought in both students and fans from the community to create an enjoyable game atmosphere.
Freshmen Melissa Smith and Nikita Engineer, as well as seniors Kaitlin Billingsley and Elyse Cottrell, each won $100 in door prizes.
I’m probably just going to help pay some medical bills,
During halftime of the men’s game, the 3-point contest finals featured senior John Bowling. Bowling knocked down 10 shots in one minute to win for the men.
Sophomore Grace Weisenberg won for the girls while wearing a walking cast and making her last three shots shooting granny-style to defeat her opponent by one shot.
That atmosphere and success carried onto the court as the teams swept the Mariners of Coastal Georgia.
The men came out on top 89-78, while the women won in thrilling fashion, 73-70.
Both teams came out trading blows and battling from the opening tip, but the Flames and Lady Flames came out victorious.
After the game, Jeff Steve, assistant women’s coach, nicknamed Hollie German “White Mamba” (a spin-off of NBA player Kobe Bryant’s nickname, “Black Mamba”) for her performance down the stretch.
The Flames and Lady Flames are both currently ranked No. 6 in the NAIA Coach’s Poll.
